Group Psychotherapy for Depression, Anxiety, and Trauma

Group psychotherapy room at Turnwell Mental Health

There is something individual therapy cannot always offer: being in a room with people who understand what you are going through because they are going through something similar. Group psychotherapy at Turnwell is a structured, clinician-guided space for people working through depression, anxiety, trauma, or interpersonal difficulties. Evidence-based formats led by licensed therapists at all four Turnwell locations.

What Is Group Psychotherapy

Clinically Guided. Communally Healing.

Group psychotherapy is not a support group. It is a structured, clinically guided form of therapy facilitated by a licensed mental health professional. Participants work through shared challenges using evidence-based frameworks, building therapeutic gains alongside connection with others who understand their experience from the inside.

The group format itself is therapeutic. Observing others navigate similar struggles, offering and receiving support, and practicing interpersonal skills within a safe and structured environment accelerates progress that often takes longer in individual therapy alone. Group members frequently report that feeling less alone in their experience is one of the most significant benefits.

All groups at Turnwell are facilitated by licensed therapists trained in the specific approach used for that group. Groups are small enough for genuine connection and clinically structured enough to produce real therapeutic movement.

FAQ

Group Therapy Questions

What is group psychotherapy?
Group psychotherapy involves structured therapy sessions led by a licensed therapist with a small group of participants who share similar challenges. Unlike self-help groups, group therapy is clinically guided and uses evidence-based approaches. It builds therapeutic progress alongside connection with others who understand your experience from the inside.
Where is group therapy available at Turnwell?
Group psychotherapy is available at all four Turnwell locations: Alpharetta GA, Mt. Pleasant (Charleston) SC, Aventura FL, and Tampa Bay FL. Contact your nearest location for current group availability, schedules, and enrollment information.
Is group therapy covered by insurance?
Group therapy is covered by many major insurance plans. Coverage varies by plan and session format. Contact us to verify your specific benefits before enrolling in a group.
Is group therapy as effective as individual therapy?
Group therapy is clinically demonstrated to be as effective as individual therapy for many conditions, including depression, anxiety, and interpersonal difficulties. For some presentations, the group context provides unique therapeutic benefits that individual therapy cannot replicate, including normalization, peer feedback, and the practice of interpersonal skills in a real social context.
Can I do group therapy and individual therapy at the same time?
Yes. Many patients participate in both individual and group therapy simultaneously. The two formats are complementary. Individual therapy provides private space for personal exploration. Group therapy offers the additional dimension of relational healing and peer connection. Your Turnwell therapist can help you determine what combination is most appropriate.
