What Is EMDR Therapy

Reprocessing Trauma at Its Root

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy for PTSD and trauma that is recognized by the World Health Organization, the American Psychological Association, and the Department of Veterans Affairs as an effective treatment. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require patients to describe their trauma in detail. Instead, it uses bilateral stimulation, typically guided eye movements, to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories and reduce their emotional intensity.

The underlying principle is that traumatic memories can become "stuck" in a state of activation, causing intrusive symptoms, hypervigilance, avoidance, and emotional reactivity. EMDR facilitates the natural processing that allows these memories to be integrated without triggering overwhelming distress. Most patients find that the memory does not disappear after EMDR, but it loses the emotional charge that was driving their symptoms.

In addition to EMDR, Turnwell therapists offer CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), and CPT (Cognitive Processing Therapy) depending on your diagnosis, presentation, and treatment goals.

What Individual Therapy and EMDR Can Address

Turnwell's licensed therapists work with a broad range of mental health conditions, with particular expertise in trauma-related presentations.

PTSD & Complex Trauma

EMDR and CPT are the evidence-based first-line treatments for PTSD. Turnwell's therapists have specialized training in trauma-informed care for both single-incident and complex developmental trauma.

Depression

Individual therapy for depression addresses thought patterns, behavioral activation, grief, and the interpersonal dimensions of depressive episodes. Often coordinated with psychiatric medication management.

Anxiety Disorders

CBT and EMDR are both effective for generalized anxiety, panic disorder, and social anxiety. Exposure-based approaches are integrated when clinically appropriate for phobias and avoidance patterns.

Grief & Life Transitions

Structured grief therapy for loss, bereavement, major life changes, relationship endings, and existential challenges that require more than supportive conversation.

Emotional Dysregulation & DBT

DBT is specifically designed for patients who struggle with intense emotions, impulsive behaviors, or unstable relationships. It builds practical skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

OCD & Intrusive Thoughts

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the gold standard for OCD, is available at Turnwell. Coordinated with psychiatric medication management for patients who benefit from a combined approach.

FAQ

EMDR & Therapy Questions Answered

What is EMDR therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy primarily used for PTSD and trauma. It uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories and reduce their emotional intensity. It is recognized by the WHO, APA, and VA as an effective PTSD treatment and does not require detailed verbal description of the traumatic event.
How long does EMDR therapy take?
The number of sessions varies depending on the complexity of the trauma and individual response. Single-incident trauma may see significant improvement in 6 to 12 sessions. Complex or developmental trauma typically requires a longer course. Your Turnwell therapist will discuss a realistic timeline at your initial evaluation.
Where is in-person EMDR available?
In-person EMDR therapy is available at Turnwell in Alpharetta GA and Charleston SC. Telehealth EMDR and therapy are available throughout Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida for all other patients.
Is therapy covered by insurance?
Yes. Individual therapy at Turnwell is covered by most major insurance plans, including Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, and United Healthcare. Coverage varies by plan. We verify your benefits before your first appointment.
What is the difference between EMDR and CBT?
CBT addresses the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors through structured exercises. EMDR focuses on reprocessing traumatic memories using bilateral stimulation without requiring detailed verbal description of the trauma. Both are evidence-based. Your Turnwell therapist will recommend the approach most appropriate for your presenting concerns and history.
Can therapy and medication management be coordinated at Turnwell?
Yes. One of the key strengths of the Turnwell model is that your therapist and psychiatrist work within the same practice. This allows for regular communication and coordinated adjustments to your overall treatment plan, whether that involves medication changes, therapy modality shifts, or the addition of interventional treatments like TMS or Spravato.
