Two Decades of Psychiatric Excellence Across Two States

About Dr. Upshaw

Dr. W. Nate Upshaw has devoted more than two decades to the practice of psychiatry, building one of the most versatile and technically advanced clinical backgrounds in the field. Since 2004, he has served patients across the full spectrum of care settings, inpatient psychiatric units, VA hospitals, academic medicine, and private practice, developing a depth of experience that few psychiatrists can match.

A graduate of Tulane University School of Medicine, Dr. Upshaw went on to hold a full-time faculty position at the University of South Florida, where he contributed to both the education of the next generation of psychiatrists and ongoing clinical research. His time within the VA hospital system further sharpened his ability to treat complex, co-occurring conditions including PTSD, treatment-resistant depression, and substance use disorders in veterans.

Dr. Upshaw is one of a select group of psychiatrists with specialized training in all three of the most powerful interventional treatments in psychiatry: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), and Spravato® (esketamine). This breadth of expertise means patients who have not responded to conventional medications have real options.

Today, Dr. Upshaw serves as Medical Director at both Turnwell Mental Health of Charleston and Turnwell Mental Health of Tampa Bay. His philosophy is built on ensuring the highest level of privacy, personalization, and clinical precision for every patient he serves. Patients consistently describe him as a physician who listens carefully, asks the right questions, and makes them feel genuinely supported.
